I received the BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering at New York University. I joined the Cal Poly faculty in 1968, and served as department head in 1980 and 1981 and have served as Department Chair from 2001 through 2007.

My experience involves serving as Director of Research and Development for Victor Corporation, Director of Advanced Development for Sirius Systems Technologies, Director of Testing and Development for Tandon Corporation, vice-president, one of the co-founders and Director of Research and Development for CCG Labs, Inc., President and one of the co-founders of CLAS Inc., Consulting Engineer for cryogenic controls and solar energy research, Engineer for General Cable Corporation. I am currently President and founder of CK Associates, a consultancy that specializes in custom software development.

Among my publications are six textbooks:

I have also served as consulting and series editor for three publishers: Prentice-Hall, Reston and Brooks-Cole.

I believe that I am recognized as a leading Engineering educator having received both local and national teaching awards: I received the American Society for Engineering Education Dow Young Faculty Award in 1977, the Cal Poly College of Engineering TRW Excellence in Teaching Award in 1995, and am a seven time recipient of the Cal Poly EE Department’s Most Inspirational Professor Award (1970, 1976, 1986, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996).

I have been active in consulting, most recently in implementing a distributed database for a local company as well as a wireless network of 5 computers for acquiring and sharing data on registrants (upwards of 6000) for a commercial show, as well as printing the registration badges including a PDF417 2D barcode containing all pertinent information on the registrant. Also, I recently completed the Homeless Tracking System – a distributed database on the homeless now in use by 6 agencies in SLO County, a project in which Computerland of SLO was a subcontractor.

I have been a consultant for CRC Press, Inc. for over 8 years, where I developed eight commercial scientific software applications:

In the work for CRC Press, I also developed custom software for producing camera-ready copies for publishing Data On Organic Compounds (a work encompassing 7 volumes and almost 7000 pages) and a number of derivative works: Names, Synonyms and Structures of Organic Compounds and Data On Common Organic Compounds. I also programmatically produced the publication pages for the Handbook of Organic Solvents, Handbook of Pesticides and the Handbook of Inorganic Compounds and portions of the 72nd edition of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, all for CRC Press.

My long standing area of interest is the creative solution of problems; be they the design of electronic circuits and systems or the application of computer techniques to publishing and education specifically. I am also interested in any general problems that may be amenable to computer technologies and innovative techniques.
