What is Power Electronics?

"Study of processing and controlling the flow of electric energy by supplying voltages and currents in a form that is optimally suited for user loads."

"It is the technology that allows the use of high switching frequency for energy conversion circuits which is the key to smaller, lighter, and more efficient power processors."

Scope and applications of Power Electronics:

All electrical aspects that involve or require efficient and high switching frequency energy conversions such as AC to DC, AC to AC, DC to AC, and DC to DC. Applications range from Switch Mode DC power supply, Lighting, Heating, Uninterruptible Power Supplies, Adjustable Speed Drives, Traction Control and Battery Chargers for Electric Vehicles, Audio Amplifiers, to High Power applications such as High Voltage DC Transmission and FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System) controllers.

Does Cal Poly offer Power Electronics course?

Yes. For undergraduate level we offer EE 410 (Power Electronics I) with Lab in the Fall, and EE 411 (Power Electronics II) also with Lab in the Winter. EE410 introduces the basic concept of Power Electronics and covers basic power electronics circuit topology such as Buck, Boost, Cuk converters to name a few and DC drives. EE 411 deals with ancilliary issues and latest applications in power electronics. This includes the Resonant converter circuits, HVDC, FACTS controllers, and AC drives.
If you are wanting more Power Electronics course, then I recently designed a Switching Power Supply Design class EE 527. This is graduate level course, but all seniors are welcome to take it.

Do I have to be a Power major to take these courses?

No. Any student who has completed the prerequisites to these courses and has interest in switching mode electronic circuits should take these courses. The past three years, more and more electronics major enrolled in both classes which they then use for either major technical electives or support technical electives.

Do you have pictures of circuits used in Power Electronics Lab?
